The Deck building renovation recently won a Western Australian Design Award. It continues to thrill visitors on a daily basis. The Deck offers a breath of fresh air for those travelling through the area, it has sea views and spacious gardens and is a great place to relax and shop. You can also catch up on e-mails 7 days a week at The Deck.

Located between Albany and Esperance and directly south of Wave Rock, Hyden and Ravensthorpe on the pristine Fitzgerald Coast, Hopetoun is also easily accessible from Perth by road or just a one hour plane flight away.

Gallery and Unique Gift Shop

The Gallery section of the shop includes the Images of the Fitzgerald, a range of predominantly photographic artwork that reflects the pristine scenery, unusual and beautiful plants and flowers, the fascinating textures and colours of the natural and man made features of the region that are encompassed by the Fitzgerald Biosphere, a World renowned nature hot spot. These form the palette that is used to create the Images of the Fitzgerald works.

The art is in both traditional and abstract form, presented on a range of medium including large format canvas prints, posters, framed prints, smaller framed souvenir prints, and greetings cards. All large format prints are either limited edition or unique works. Our larger prints are also very popular for interior decoration projects, and can be commissioned to order particularly for corporate projects. Gifts at The Deck have a distinctive flavour that showcase the region and the proximity to the ocean. Books Maps & Souvenirs

Books and Maps At The Deck we specialise in Australian and new release books, focusing on Australian authors, and books that feature topics with particular relevance to Australia. We also have a large range of natural history titles and bush books, together with a few wild-card titles that are just too interesting to ignore! We receive many complimentary comments on our range of books which offers the keen reader something a little out of the ordinary.

Maps stocked at The Deck include topographical and tourist maps of Western Australia, the local and regional area. Southern Ocean Discovery Centre

The Southern Ocean Discovery Centre fills a separate section of the Deck complex. This interactive display provides a fascinating insight into the Fitzgerald Biosphere Regions very special coastline (Fitzgerald Coast), unique plants and dramatic coastal and inland mountain ranges. There is also a telecamera and telescope set for visitors to view the Australian sea lion colony that haul out on seal island just off shore, it is quite a buzz when they emerge from the ocean glistening in the sunlight, or spar for territory or a position amongst the group on the rock. The display of beach treasures, the shell discovery basket of local shells, posters and power point display interests many visitors.

The Southern Ocean Discovery Centre includes information on the Fitzgerald River National Park, and the discovery centre souvenir booklet provides further information to take away with you.

Visits to the Southern Ocean Discovery Centre are by gold coin donation making everyone welcome. The souvenir booklet is $2.00 and can be purchased as a useful local guide.

Tourist information & National Park Passes

In addition to the Discovery Centre The Deck keeps a range of additional local and regional information for visitors, you can also purchase local, holiday and annual National Park Passes at The Deck. The stunning array of wildflowers which can be seen all year round (they peak in spring) are of great interest to visitors from around the world.

At The Deck we keep a range of brochures and some excellent books on Western Australian, regional and local wildflowers.The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve is referred to as "the most important Mediterranean ecosystem reserve in the World"(Dr. Bernd von Drost, 1989, UNESCO).

Gourmet Ice Cream, Sorbets, Coffee and more

While you are at The Deck take time to relax and enjoy some light refreshments, the Deck has developed quite a reputation for its gourmet ice creams and sorbets which are very special, we also serve great freshly brewed coffee, make delicious fruit smoothies and milk shakes and tasty light food throughout the day.

The Deck building was once the town's original post office, which whilst it has been renovated to a high standard, still acts as a living link to history and provides visitors with a feeling of space and time that reflects the region's relaxed pace of life.
